Just like the way the Cable TV distribution networks were initially built on a Coaxial Cable and later upgraded to HFC Hybrid fiber-Coaxial distribution plants, it won’t take much of an effort to now build an IP Multicast Gigabyte HFCE Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial - Ethernet Distribution plants, that are inherent bi-directional and can easily carry Voice, Video, Data and various value added services “VAS” on these NGNs built and operated.

The recent recommendation by (TRAI) to implement Virtual Network Operator (VNO) is welcome news to the telecom industry that is facing innumerable challenges. Thanks to the diverse geography of the country, operators have long faced issues creating a profitable business model out of their telecom investments. Be it spectrum licensing or telecom equipment or fiber investments.
India, now on the verge of next wave of digital revolution thanks to initiatives like Digital India and 100 Smart Cities by the ambitious BJP led Modi government at the Centre, needs a revolutionary telecom policy that generously involves the participation of industry stakeholders of all types- both big and small.
As per TRAI recommendation, a VNO will be able to deliver any type of telecom services – including home telephony, broadband and OTT services like messaging, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) – under a new Unified Licensing (UL) regime. The new UL model is expected to override some of the prohibitive licensing model existing within the country.
Basic Services on an IPTV Platform
o TV Mail: Provides functionalities such as send mail, receive mail and address book. While the user is checking the mail, the television session continues to play in a minimized screen on the top.
o TV Banking: Provides functionalities such as account statement, balance check, funds transfer and bill payment.
o Targeted Ads: Service provider can push advertisements to each individual set top box based on specific interests of the users. So, two users in two different rooms within the same house may be watching different set of advertisements via two different set top boxes.
o TV Billing: This is a presentation of a unified billing for all the services the user has accessed. User has an option to view a consolidated bill or can drill down to various service levels.
o Map Mash-ups: Provides the latest traffic, airline, train information, news, social media integration and weather information on the television.
o TV Chat: Provides users the ability to chat with their friends while watching their favourite TV programme. Also targeted advertisements are tied to the TV Chat. A user while discussing health issues could be instantaneously receiving advertisements on Yoga classes in the area nearby or clinics or specialty hospitals for the disease being discussed.
o TV Album: TV Album is an online photo sharing service. The users will have a GPRS and camera enabled cell phone with a client application installed on it. Through this client application, users can upload the photographs on the server while on trip with family and friends. The server pushes those images to the service provider’s server instantly. The images are ready to be rendered on television set at home so that it can be instantly shared with all at home.
o Caller ID: While watching television, whenever a user gets an incoming call on any of the sets of IP Phones, a Pop Up will be displayed on the TV which informs the user about the name of the caller. Users can either disconnect that call using the TV remote or can divert that call to another phone that is closer to pick up.
o T-Commerce: Users can place orders from TV, be it their favourite pizza, groceries or utility search.
