Within 15 days, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will invite stakeholders’ comments for holding another round of spectrum auction for the airwaves that went unsold in the October sale, according to TRAI Chairman R S Sharma.

Brazil and Spain have partnered to lay an undersea cable in the Atlantic Ocean to offer fast online and cloud services to the people of both countries by 2019. The EllaLink subsea cable will connect to data centers in Madrid and Sao Paulo, as well as in Lisbon, using shielded fiber rings, officials said on Monday. The cable will also connect the archipelagoes of Madeira, Spain's Canary Islands and Africa's Cape Verde along the route.
Hinduja Group is eyeing Headend in the Sky (HITS) cable broadcast in Punjab. Having acquired government approvals for its HITS business in 2015, the Hinduja Group plans to roll out its digital television distribution business under the brand name NXT Digital across India.
Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV is amongst the 6 TV channels which got the licence from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) in March 2017. Republic TV, which is expected to make its appearance soon, has already started a series of ad campaigns to create buzz around the launch. Of the six licences granted in March, four were non-news and two were news. Four licences were for uplinking while two were for downlinking. Sony Pictures Networks India subsidiary Bangla Entertainment received a downlinking licence under the name Sony Aath. The licence is for Bangla and other Indian languages.
In 42 days (till 20th April), the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) granted 193 MSO licences, while Arasu Cable TV Corporation (Tamil Nadu government-owned) was also granted a provisional licence with the condition that they digitise their network within three months. Its registration is subject to the MIB taking a final decision of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) recommendations on the entry of government in TV broadcasting.

The telecom major Vodafone will sell 9.5 per cent additional stake to the Aditya Birla Group for Rs.130 per share after they merge their telecom operations to create the country’s largest operator worth more than $23 billion. AB Group has filed the composite scheme of amalgamation between Vodafone and Idea Cellular with the BSE, which states that the merged entity shall be under the joint control of the two firms, and will be governed by the shareholders’ agreement.
Google has come up with a new Google Earth Virtual Reality (VR) which allows users to visit any address in the world and fly over it in 3D with the help of a headset system. Using a new updated feature on Google Earth VR, people can choose their own destinations, as long as they know the address or name of the location.
Many consumer organisations including the Chennai-based Consumer Action Group (CAG) are in favour of mandatory labelling in broadband services. The idea was mooted by the Jaipur-based CUTS International. The recent recusals by the two successive benches have delayed the Trai tariff case at the Madras High Court, but now it will be heard by the Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee on 24th April. First, the two-member bench comprising Justice Nagamuthu and Justice Anita Sumanth had recused from the case after an anonymous petition to the chief justice had claimed that Justice Nagamuthu had sought P Chidambaram’s help in becoming the judge.
