On 26th May, Tata Sky added half a dozen new channels. The direct-to-home (DTH) operator has already added 5 HD channels some time back. The list of new channel includes Hindi Khabar (channel no 583), Gulistan News (channel no 1179), FTV India (channel no 772), Care World (channel no 773), Digvijay 24×7 (channel no 1644) and Surya Comedy (channel no 1854).

On 25th May, the country’s telecom regulator TRAI has directed telecom operators to stop providing discriminatory tariffs to their subscribers of the same category and report all plans to it within seven days of their launch.

The controversy-prone channel Republic TV is still ahead of channels of its genre, though its weekly impressions dropped 19.55% to 1.7 million impressions in Week 20. Times Now stands at number two, and was almost half of Republic TV’s weekly impressions. Times Now also saw a drop in its impressions as did the other three channels in the top 5. NDTV 24×7 fell to the bottom of the table. India Today TV recovered to grab the No. 3 position. CNN News18 too moved up to the 4th position.

The Union Cabinet has abolished the 25-year old Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB). Now the administrative ministries and departments will process applications for foreign direct investment (FDI) requiring government approval. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) will process the FDI applications related to the media and entertainment sector.

Doordarshan has recorded faster growth than All India Radio (AIR) in FY17. The national broadcaster posted 9.5% growth in revenue during this period, while AIR grew by just 1.79%. DD’s revenue stood at Rs 827.51 crore in FY17 compared to Rs 755.79 crore a year ago. AIR, on the other hand, has reported revenue of Rs 455 crore in FY17, up from Rs 447.76 crore a year ago.

Dish TV India is planning to launch its OTT business. For this, the DTH operator is already incorporating a wholly-owned subsidiary. DTH players are fast evolving, as all over the world people are moving to OTT and new media. They are increasingly using new media platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar. Films are being premiered on Netflix. The arrival of Reliance Jio has also fuelled OTT growth.

The DTH operator Dish TV reported a dismal performance for FY17 due to demonetization and Reliance Jio’s free packages. The loss in the fiscal fourth quarter was mainly due to fall in subscription revenue and package downgrading by existing subscribers. The impact of Reliance Jio, though limited, was felt in urban areas. Reliance Jio influenced consumer usage patterns.

On 24th May, the country’s telecom regulator TRAI submitted a detailed response to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and rejected DoT’s call to reconsider its recommendation of fines worth Rs 3,050 crore on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular for not providing adequate points of interconnect (PoIs) to Reliance Jio while stressing that it has the powers to suggest penal action on erring telcos in view of the larger public interest.

Big FM has launched a retro station (94.3 FM) in Lucknow on 23rd May. Recently, it added seven stations in Maharashtra, and its goal is to bring in a new wave of timeless Hindi music in the city by building on its distinctive and pioneering retro format on radio. Jolly LLB 2 famed actress Huma Qureshi launched 94.3 FM in Lucknow and flagged off ‘Studio on Wheels’, a RJ marathon in the city. The shooting of Jolly LLB2 was mostly done in this city.

18% GST for cable & DTH services

The government has fixed 18% GST for cable TV and direct-to-home (DTH) services. According to industry experts, the move will bring some relief to cable and DTH companies as well as consumers as it will lead to tax savings for them, which would lower the prices of these services. GST has ended multiple taxations.
