Economic growth has picked up from three year low of 5.7 per cent in the first quarter this year. This has also given a chance to the government to get back at the opposition who was criticising the negative impact of Demonetization and GST implementation. However, many in the opposition still reiterate that this figure is not the real picture of economy; it is simply a manipulation of data before the Gujarat Elections.
Present day Television media and Press has been criticised by none other than the Vice president Sh. Venkaiah Naidu and I&B Minister Ms Smriti Irani. In the celebrations of the National Press Day on 16 November Mr Naidu said that the core values which guided journalism in the past are not being observed and news is being increasingly colored with views of the management of the news organizations. While greeting the media on the National Press Day, Ms Irani said in a tweet ‘let us commit ourselves to using freedom of press responsibly and objectively’. Earlier, delivering the Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture 2017, she had said that a section of media was driven by rush for TRPs, eyeballs thereby, being influenced by the ‘Headlines competing with Hashtags’.
On 3rd November the Supreme Court of India refused to stay the linking of Aadhar with mobile numbers and bank accounts, leaving the issue to be decided by a constitution bench. However, the court asked the banks and telcos to avoid scaring people with warning messages. According to Government’s affidavit in the Court, the last date for linking Aadhar is 31st March 2018. However, in its earlier verdict, the SC had ruled that ‘right to privacy’ is an intrinsic part of Right to Life and Personal Liberty. This impacts every Indian when digital solutions are forced on the masses by the Government
Phase 2 of Bharat Net, erstwhile NOFN, has been commenced by the government last month. This Phase will include connecting 150000 gram panchayats with high speed broadband with an outlay of 34000 crores. Phase 1 connects 100000 gram panchayats and is likely to be completed by end of December.
The TRAI has finally come up with its recommendations on Net Neutrality after an extensive consultation for the last three years through its various consultation papers. TRAI has recommended no discrimination in accessing the services on the Internet except special services on CDNs and IoTs.
