New Media Changing Everyday Life

email this page

With great pride, Cable Quest presents the ‘Broadcast and New Media’ special supplement, full of very relevant information for the industry. The way smart-phone and tablet numbers are increasing in India and youths are moving on to social media, New Media is gaining importance in our everyday life, like never before.

Although, conventional media viewing has not decreased, new media is being used by Indian users to compliment conventional media and get their content wherever and whenever they want. In fact, New Media has changed people’s everyday life drastically.  Printed books have been replaced by Kindle, google and Yahoo. Telephone communications have gone on Whatsapp, Viber and Skype. More and more people are using video calls rather than just voice. Multilingual software and apps are allowing people with no education also to use the mobile messaging services.

Songs and Movies are being downloaded on mobiles and tablets and viewed in aircrafts, trains, buses and cars. Sleepless nights are spent in the bed conferencing with friends on the new media.

People do their business these days sitting at home using the new media. Many companies let their employees work from home on their PCs. All this is happening so fast that it is difficult to imagine a life without the use of New Media.

Biggest boost to New Media has been given by our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who understands the power of New Media very well and knows how to use it. In fact it is due to intelligent use of new media that Modi influenced Youths of the country to vote for him in the last Lok Sabha elections leading him to a massive victory.

The day Modi took over as the PM, he has been directing his Ministers and bureaucrats to harness the power of social media to enhance communication. His emphasis on ‘Digital India’ strengthen his resolve to use new media the most for governess and economic growth.

During his tour of the US last month Modi spoke maximum about his government’s progress on Digital India, ease of doing business and start- up India. Projecting India as a heaven for investors, the PM said his government was working on deregulation and ensuring ease of doing business as he aims to convert the country’s economy from $ 8 trillion to $ 20 trillion.

He also spoke in detail about the benefits of social media, particularly how it has been useful to him to connect with the people within the country and abroad, and how it can help take corrective steps if some government steps go wrong.

Speaking before a gathering of Silicon Valley CEOs in San Jose, Modi announced plans to create more public Wi-Fi spots, including at 500 railway stations across India, and an aggressive expansion of the National Optical Fibre Network to take broadband to 600,000 villages.

Modi said Digital India was born out of conviction that it was possible to rapidly transform the lives of people on the margins and touch the lives of the weakest, farthest and the poorest citizens of India, changing the way the nation will live and work.

“We will connect all schools and colleges with broadband. Building I-ways are as important as highways,” he said, adding: “We are expanding our public Wi-Fi hotspots.” “I have met many of you in Delhi and New York, and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. These are the new neighbourhoods of our new world,” Modi said. “If Facebook were a country, it would be the third most populous one, and the most connected,” he said.

“Google today has made teachers less awe-inspiring and grandparents more idle. Twitter has turned everyone into a reporter. The traffic lights that need to work the best are on CISCO routers,”

Modi said amid applause. “As our economy and our lives get more wired, we are also giving the highest importance to data privacy and security, intellectual property rights and cyber security,” he said at a dinner interaction attended by, among others, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Qualcomm executive chairman Paul Jacobs, and Google CEO Sunder Pichai. “We will transform governance, making it more transparent, accountable, accessible and participative,”

Modi said, adding that e-governance is the foundation of better governance that is efficient, economical and effective. “In a nation of one billion cell phones, m-governance or mobile governance has the potential to make development a truly inclusive and comprehensive mass movement. It puts governance within everyone’s reach,” he said.

Prime Minister also met top executives of major media and communication companies in the US, discussing the latest trends in the field and opportunities with regard to India. Top executives of Comcast, Time Warner, Discovery, Sony, ESPN, News Corp, 21st Century Fox, Disney Industries, ABC television group were invited for the interaction with Modi. The focus of the Prime Minister's meeting media honchos was to understand about the trends in media and communication technologies and the opportunities for India.

Already, most of the large broadcast companies in India are running their OTT services. Some of the DTH operators have also introduced their TV everywhere service. Lukup Media, a DAS MSO is the first one to offer complete IP based cable TV service for cable operators. This increasing use of new media in the country will help in greater penetration of Broadband and give a much needed boost to our economy.
