It seems issuing diktats has become a regular habit at the Information & Broadcasting Ministry (MIB). From proposal to regulate online media to punishing journalists engaged in fake news and meddling in the Prasar Bharati affairs, the ministry has come full circle with its decision made in April 2018 to create a Social Media Communication Hub. The MIB had floated a tender for the creation of this controversial Hub which will enable the government “to grasp the effect of various social media campaigns conducted on various schemes run by the Government of India” to “improve the scope” of such campaigns and “to make a specific theme trending”.

Is it the end of Road for DD FreeDish?

On 20 April 2018, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) asked the national pubcaster and operator of DD FreeDish, Prasar Bharat why it should keep running the direct-to-home (DTH) platform when it only benefits the big private broadcasters. The Ministry seems to echo the long standing concern of the cable TV industry by raising this question. The cable TV industry felt that the rates of slots on FreeDish were deliberately kept high, so that only big broadcasters could take part in the e-auction.

On 20 June 2018, Disney outnumbered Comcast’s unsolicited $65 billion all-cash bid for Fox's entertainment assets. Disney came back at full throttle with $71.3 billion, split evenly between cash and stock. It was indeed an offer no one can refuse. Rupert Murdoch, Fox owner, has now agreed to the proposal, calling it "superior" to Comcast's offer. This bid of Disney is 36% higher over its original $52.4 billion bid and a 9% premium over Comcast’s competing all-cash bid of $65 billion.

Pirates today can easily capture linear TV channels and sports events in one market and retransmit the content in near-real-time in several other regions. And in some cases, they can even record and retransmit video directly from a large TV screen. Thanks to the quality of the current generation of HD and UHD displays and cameras, this results in a surprisingly good viewing experience for pirate site users.

Broadcasters should be architecting the network using a true spine-leaf model, and controlling the elements within it using SDN routing. It is the most effective way of squeezing as much potential out of IP technology as possible, in turn helping deliver optimal return on investment and higher chances of operational success.

The United Nations General Assembly had declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness about freedom of press. Press, often regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy, is the voice of the people against all forms of atrocities committed by authorities or any group of people. Time and again, governments try to rein in the freedom of the press, but every time it fails unless the press itself sells its ethics.

On 25 May 2018, a new day dawned in Europe; the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union’s digital privacy law became effective from this day. The action and reaction were quick as several websites in the U.S. blocked their services entirely rather than following the new diktat of the new regulations, while many US dailies got blocked in Europe; this also included web services like Instapaper.

A Smarter Approach to Streaming

Artificial Intelligence (AI) used to be the subject of movies. Steven Spielberg even used it as the title of his 2001 futuristic classic.
