IM

CQ: Congratulations. INX Media has garnered over 100 GRPsbetween 9X, the Hindi General Entertainment Channel and 9XM, the Hindi music entertainment channel. No other media organization has achieved so much, in so little time, from a standing start.

IM: Thanks. We are very pleased with the progress of both channels. It has indeed been a great achievement for us at INX Network. When we started 4 months ago in November 2007, we were only a concept: a totally new network, with infrastructure being built, staff being recruited, systems being put in place, zero brand awareness and zero GRPs. Today, INX Media is already recognized as a major player in the Industry, with both 9X and 9XM. With new shows coming onto 9X and the total dominance of 9XM in Music, our position is strong. And, of course, the soon-to-be-launched premier English news channel, NewsX, will add to this network strength.

TOPPER AN UNIQUE CHANNEL

CQ: First of all we wish to congratulate you on this unique venture of an educational TV channel 'Topper'. What made you enter this altogether new field from what you have been handling so far in the industry?

TP: Statistics show that there are approximately 300 million children who enrolled in schools across India. Realizing that the world is becoming competitive by the day, there is a need for strong primary and secondary education foundation so that the students can aim for best institutes in the future. Thus, we felt that there is a significant opportunity to supplement the existing school system so that children can make the best of their secondary education. Also, the standard of education differs across the country and we felt that there is a need for consistent quality of education and a greater need to supplement it. Therefore w e zeroed in on using TV and internet as the medium of education as the mediums would really provide consistent education. We hope it would provide major impetus to the existing education system.

Digital Cinema the Future of Movies

CQ: What is the state of digital cinema in India?

Ashish: Digital cinema has made a humble beginning in India. A few cinemas in Mumbai have it on a functional basis within their premises. However, the big picture is an entire chain of cinemas across the country beaming in the magnum opus via satellite directly.

Last month, Cable Quest reported the budget 2007-08 as a huge disappointment for the industry. Proposals were mooted by the industry representatives such as FICCI, CII and IBF and the regulator, TRAI. But all their aspirations went in vain specially with the biggest disappointment that came up with the withdrawal of exemption from countervailing duty (CVD) on set-top box (STB) manufacturing parts, due to which the importers will now have to pay a whopping 16 per cent on CVD to get the equipment from outside India.
