To bring 5 billion people in the fold of mobile broadband, the UN Broadband Commission has called for a “New Deal” which will involve fresh industry collaboration and public-private partnerships (PPP). At the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development's 2017 Spring Meeting in Hong Kong on March 16, participants debated the need for a new deal between all broadband stakeholders to work towards full global connectivity and digital transformation.
On 31st January, the regulator TRAI approved Jio’s free voice calling and data plan and said that it was not a violation of the regulatory guidelines. On 16th March, the telecom disputes settlement appellate and Tribunal (TDSAT) has asked the regulator to re-examine its nod to Jio’s free promotional offers, and also inform it about the outcome and findings of the examination within two weeks.

R.S. Sharma, chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) inaugurated a national telecom seminar at the Amity University campus in Noida, U.P. on Jan 20. Vouching for changes in policies for deeper penetration of the internet in Indian markets, Sharma said that need of the hour is to create an infrastructure that can provide internet services to a population of 1.2 billion despite geographical and economic challenges. A giant company of telecom sector Bharti Airtel has escalated its legal battle against the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), filing an additional affidavit in the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) in which it has slammed the watchdog for what it termed ‘Tacitly’ allowing Reliance Jio Infocomm to break rules around ‘anti-competitive’ promotional offers. In the affidavit filed with the TDSAT on Jan 10, Airtel has made the allegations, Sat release stated.
As per the data collected a public sector broadband service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), 10-million approximately wired broadband subscriber mark by last October 2016 with a highest rise in October. Obviously BSNL added 60,000 more subscribers in the 10th month of 2016 which is the highest figure as compared to others in the industry. MTNL was the only broadband player to lose 10,000 customers during the month. India’s top five broadband service providers constituted 80.36% market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of October.
Manthan Broadband Services Pvt. Ltd. is a leading multi system operator (MSO) in West Bengal continues to black out Star TV channels over a payment dispute since Jan 6. Lakhs of subscribers of Manthan reported did not have access to over 45 channels. It is 4th one blackout on Manthan since June 2016. Both Manthan and Star India didn’t take any initiative on Jan 09 although talks were due. Consequently, subscribers continued to be deprived of the channels for more days.
The public sector telecom unit Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has started working with local cable operators to roll out its services like broadband over fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). BSNL launched its FTTH service in Warangal in association with the LCOs for the first time in the state of Telengana. With the FTTH route, BSNL can offer high-speed internet services and phone facility to the subscribers.

According to report, the number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,058.86 million at the end of Mar-16 to 1,059.86 million at the end of Jun-16, registering a growth of 0.09% over the previous quarter. This reflects year-on-year growth of 5.25% over the same quarter of last year.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India seeks to extend the time mobile users get to change their service-provider if a particular company is shutting shop or selling its spectrum. This is an issue for discussion in the latest consultation paper of the TRAI on issues related to closure of mobile phone services. The paper titled 'Closure of Access Service" will seek feedback from telecom eco-system stakeholders to set up a framework to give an extended time and more options to users facing termination of services.
