The Changing World of Video Codecs

email this page

With consumption of high-resolution video content and virtual reality (VR) continually increasing, the broadcast industry has had no choice but to innovate with new video compression techniques. For example, Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is a compression standard we will see finalised in 2020, with capabilities to support immersive content, resolutions from 4K to 16K and 360˚ videos. Meanwhile, Essential Video Coding (EVC) has been fast-tracked by MPEG to provide a royalty-free, standardised video coding solution to address business needs, such as video streaming. Similarly, with OTT consumption on the rise, codecs are set to change even more, with AOMedia’s AV1 currently seen as the ‘codec of choice’ for streaming media distribution supported by the likes of Apple, Amazon and Netflix. However, with all the excitement around 4K and 8K, it’s easy to forget that a huge number of people are still consuming HD, and existing codecs like HEVC are arguably receiving less attention.

This article from Remi Beaudouin, Chief Strategy Officer at ATEME, will look at the past, present and future of codecs such as AV1, HEVC, VVC, EVC and LCEVC. With the industry having primarily used MPEG-2 and H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) over the past decade, the article will look at how these codecs may continue to adapt, but also how new entrants such as VVC, EVC and LCEVC will shake up the market in 2020 and beyond.
